This action from the DNC to suppress the public viewing regarding its own autopsy report on the 2024 election appears remarkable but not surprising. Averse to hard truths, the Democrats' governing body operates closer to a communications shop than an electoral entity devoted to cultivating grassroots capacities for winning elections.
Reluctant to break with the party establishment's culture of conformity, the DNC has stayed within the influence of the previous administration all through this past year. Publishing such a report would have indicated whether party leaders truly desire to encourage honest conversation about the errors which allowed the former president to win re-election. However, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there is little to be learned following the tragic debacle from the last cycle.
"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If the answer is no, it’s a distraction from what truly matters," a justification which was presented to justify concealing the analysis.
A genuine analysis with any value would confront a series of difficult topics. Among them are:
This refusal is consistent with a pattern of evading uncomfortable facts. It echoes a situation in which virtually every elected Democrat in Washington acquiesced to a sitting president's insistence on seeking another term until a poor campaign event led to a change.
Concurrently, overwhelming numbers of Democratic voters were continually telling surveyors of their opposition to the incumbent to run again.
A thorough report could investigate matters about campaign spending, such as how much money were directed to high-priced advisors and media firms during a campaign that managed to spend an enormous amount during the general election.
At its core, the suppression regarding the analysis highlights a deference to the established hierarchy that oversaw an unsuccessful electoral effort. The message to rank-and-file members – including millions of loyal volunteers – appears to be that they cannot have a right to know what the insiders say they discovered based on an analysis drawing from feedback from all states.
A party incapable to publicly examine its own failings is unlikely to climb out of the rut that proved so advantageous to the winning candidate.
